“Lindsay has an incredible emotional and physical presence on screen,” says artist Richard Phillips of—who else?—Lindsay Lohan. “[She] holds an existential vulnerability, while harnessing the power of the transcendental—the moment in transition. She is able to connect with us past all of our memory and projection, expressing our own inner eminence.”
This reads as a powerful statement on the young emblem of Hollywood excess, whose exploits and legal hysteria have threatened to overshadow her work on screen in recent years. Many may find Lohan a tough pill to swallow as an actress crossing over into the art world, perhaps due to the discomfort that comes with confronting notions of celluloid immortality with the darkness that comes—and has always come—with it. Phillips employs the gravity of Lohan’s magnetism in this, a 90-second film (co-directed by surf videographer Taylor Steele) for the Venice Biennale. Presented by Gagosian Gallery, the clip will air as part of “Commercial Break,” presented by the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture from June 1st through 5th, on an imposing Jumbotron floating the length of the Grand Canal. Phillips accesses his star’s duality, specifically by referencing Brigitte Bardot’s classic identity split in Godard’s Contempt (1963), juxtaposed with “the psychosexual amalgam of Bibi Anderson and Liv Ulman in Ingmar Bergman’s Persona (1966).”
Half-submerged in a Malibu infinity pool that spills out into the Pacific, Lindsay stares off at the California horizon and absorbs all of it in its gaping oblivion. As the churning squall of Tamaryn’s “Cascades” surges in the background, Lohan herself emits a force that feels like forever, but for now it’s at least a welcome return to the screen… if only for 90 seconds, online.
